Background

Teko Socks was founded in Boulder, Colorado in 2004, around the idea of making premium performance outdoor socks with the least possible environmental impact.

Today Boulder is still our home and sustainability is still the foundation that drives every aspect of our company. From product sourcing through production and packaging, to delivery.

We approach sustainability as a balancing act. It's not possible to produce a product without using energy and natural resources, so it's our job to minimize our footprint at every stage. A major element of our commitment is constant research of new materials and production techniques to make that footprint smaller.

Brand Promises

One way we express our philosophy is through the four Brand Promises we've made to our customers, our dealers and ourselves:

1. We will always strive to make our products and company operations as environmentally sound   as possible.

2. Product performance will never be compromised in pursuit of lower environmental impact.

3. Teko will never use a material or production method that doesn't truly reduce our environmental impact.

4. We will never stop researching new and improved materials, sources and production methods.

Teko recognizes that we can always improve on our environmental production practices. We're happy to share our knowledge and we welcome your suggestions.

Commitment

Teko is committed to producing the highest quality performance socks while minimizing our environmental impact.

We approach sustainability as a balancing act. It's not possible to produce a product without using energy and natural resources, so it's our job to minimize our footprint at every stage. A major element of our commitment is constant research of new materials and production techniques to make that footprint smaller.

  • Energy: Teko is 100% wind-powered at the office and the factory. Carbon offsets are purchased for staff travel.
  • Materials: Our organic merino wool comes from Argentina from a group of farms that have been raising sheep organically for decades. Only non-motorized methods are used to herd the sheep. They are fed only organically-grown food and are not subjected to hormones, vaccinations, mulesing, or chemical drenches. Their grazing area is never sprayed with pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. Strict water conservation methods are employed, as are protections against overgrazing. Organic merino wool is substantially more expensive than the non-organic alternative, but Teko believes the investment is worth it, both for consumers and the planet.
  • Our recycled tekoPOLY fiber is made from 100% post-consumer waste, like plastic bottles.
  • Chlorine-free processing: The chlorine-free process used to make tekoMERINO machine washable and shrink-proof, is the onlyBluesign® certifiedshrink-proofing process currently available for wool.
  • Non-toxic dyes: No allergens, carcinogens, heavy metals or formaldehyde are used in our dyes. OekoTex 100 certification.
  • Made in the USA: All of Teko's socks are knitted in North Carolina. This saves trans-Pacific shipping energy and pollutants. Well-regulated US facilities produce much lower levels of pollution.
  • Sourcing: All materials except our merino wool are sourced within 200 miles of our factory in North Carolina, minimizing the impact of energy used in our shipping.
  • Carbon Footprint: Teko's carbon offset credits are purchased from the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) to mitigate the carbon footprint created by shipping and staff travel.
  • Minimal Packaging: We use chipboard, made from recycled materials like newspaper, paper bags, etc. The packaging is 100% recyclable.
  • Durability: True sustainability means allowing for the whole product lifecycle, including disposal. Our socks are some of the most durable on the market, which means they need to be replaced less often.
  • Outdoor Stewardship: Teko supports The Conservation Alliance in the US and The John Muir Trust in the UK, by donating a portion of our online sales revenue to these causes.

The actual cost of any transaction includes environmental and human elements. Teko pays fair prices for wool, labor and other materials, so that resources like land and water can be managed wisely, employees can enjoy better health and animals are treated humanely.
